    Undergraduate and Trade School Programs

Coaching students in undergraduate and trade programs increases retention, graduation rates, and career progression. This is particularly true for first generation college students.

    Graduate, Professional, and Clinical Programs

Offering success, leadership, and employment coaching to students in competitive and high potential degrees provides students with the support and skills needed for career success.

  • Supporting Non-Traditional Students

    The Issue

Estimates show that as many as 40% of college and university students follow non-traditional paths and that percentage is increasing. According to the Center for Postsecondary and Economic Success (CLASP) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), today's students:

    • may delay entry to college by a year or more following high school,
    • might be single parents,
    • may be employed full-time,
    • may attend a postsecondary institution part-time,
    • might have dependents,
    • might be financially independent,
    • might be socioeconomically challenged, or
    • may not have a high school diploma.

Most campuses lack resources and support services for nontraditional students, hindering student success.

    Support Solutions

Every school and campus has different requirements and goals, but campus officials that add student coaching expect increased graduation rates and student satisfaction amongst their target population. Typically, we provide affordable coaching services to support students throughout their academic journey and our flexible solutions vary appropriately to fit the needs and budgets of each school. Our team commonly provides one-on-one academic success and life coaching during the school year, career coaching (including resume support and interview prep) when moving toward employment decisions, and ongoing employment coaching for recent graduates. Often, we offer group coaching and topic-focused events for participating students.

Example - Women in Educational Transition Program

Our favorite example comes from an east-coast community college that offers support to their non-traditional and socioeconomically-challenged women. Every semester, the college identifies those in need and forms a cohort group with access to additional services and support to help them through their academic journey. One such benefit is free coaching for those students who apply and who the school deems would benefit from coaching.

Miley Performance Group supports the school during the academic year by providing industry-certified coaches to those students identified by the school. Each student receives up to eight confidential sessions, meeting virtually at a time that fits their schedule. While sessions are confidential, we report back FERPA-appropriate attendance details and anonymized trends reported by the coaches. In turn, the school uses this data and its internal reporting to evaluate the program's success and to secure additional grant funding.

  • Undergraduate and Trade School Programs

    The Issue

According to Eric Bettinger and Rachel Baker of MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, students who were randomly assigned to an academic coach were more likely to persist in university while they received coaching and were more likely to still be attending university one year after the coaching had ended. Their study also found that students with access to coaching showed higher graduation rates. Similarly, Stanford University found that coaching programs offered increased retention and graduation rates. Further, they noted that coaching was often more cost-effective than typical financial aid-driven solutions.

    Support Solutions

To increase continued attendance and graduation rates, we provide coaching services to support students throughout their academic journey. In addition, our flexible solutions vary appropriately to fit the needs and budgets of each school. Our team commonly provides one-on-one academic success and life coaching during the school year, career coaching (including resume support and interview prep) when moving toward employment decisions, and ongoing employment coaching for recent graduates. Often, we offer group coaching and topic-focused events for participating students.

Example - First Time College Students

One example originates from an independent, liberal arts college that realized a large percentage of their undergraduate population were the first in their family to go to college. School leaders realized that without experienced support at home, first-time students dropped out at a rate higher than students with college-educated parents. The leaders decided to offer free and low-cost coaching to their students to increase retention and graduation rates.

While Miley Performance Group is not yet directly involved in this project, we expect direct involvement as the program grows. We are making plans to provide industry-certified coaches to those students identified by the school. Each student receives as many as four confidential sessions, meeting virtually at a time that fits their schedule. While sessions are confidential, we report back FERPA-appropriate attendance details and anonymized trends reported by the coaches.

  • Graduate and Competitive Programs

    The Issue

Students in competitive programs or who are in graduate degrees often report struggles with time management, developing appropriate study habits, decreased motivation, organizational skills, and more. Increasingly, schools offer students access to life and success coaches to help with retention and graduation rates.

    Support Solutions

Success and Leadership coaching is most appropriate for students in high-demand, competitive degrees including Nursing, MD, MBA, JD, master's, and Ph.D. programs.

Our certified coaches offer real-world, experienced perspectives to support students throughout their program. Our team commonly provides one-on-one academic success and life coaching during the school year, career coaching (including resume support and interview prep) when moving toward employment decisions, and ongoing employment coaching for recent graduates. Often, we offer group coaching and topic-focused events for participating students. We also provide leadership coaching to those looking to move into people and program leadership roles.

Example - MBA and Graduate Nursing Program

We are currently developing a leadership program for a university's MBA and graduate nursing programs. The school's goal is to positively impact the students' successes while in school, but also to increase the quality of student placement within the industry. Each student will receive up to eight confidential sessions per semester. Early sessions will focus on adapting to the pace and demand of the program. Later, sessions will move to leadership skills as well as career coaching. Finally, we will offer a series of seminars on topics such as Emotional Intelligence for Workplace Communications and Leadership Skills for a Modern Workforce.
